Field Notes Stays at Bushy Summers

We have loved following Rachel on Instagram @fieldnotes for some time so when she contacted us earlier in the year to let us know she would be on the West Coast and would love to stay at Bushy, we were thrilled. Rachel has a beautiful way of seeing the world and her photographs have a calmness and simplicity about them that I personally love.

While she was here, Rachel photographed Bushy and the results as you see here are stunning. Thank you, Rachel, for staying with us and capturing our shack so perfectly.

Hi Rachel! We'd love for you to tell our readers a bit about what you do.

I am a Travel and lifestyle photographer (and writer) based in Western Australia.

How does your work represent who you are and your values?

I love finding the beauty in things that are forgotten or little bit lost. I love everything imperfectly perfect about life on this planet and I think that translates into my work at times. I love creating lives in scenes, my focus is always on emotion rather than composition. For me it’s always about how things feel. I am big on family and adventure - I love supporting small businesses and showcasing all the intricacies of this world - it’s always been my endeavour to work true to my values.

How do you use the senses to influence your creativity?

I ground myself before most shoots - especially if it’s something I am deeply passionate about. I like to explore and spend time in a space before I photograph it to get a sense of how it makes me feel - before I start working in the space. I think it helps to tell a more authentic, full bodied story.

What comes to mind when I say ‘sound’?

The ocean. I love the sound of the sea. My practice is always about being flexible and relaxed and I think the sea is the greatest example of that.

What about ‘smell’?

The smell of the Australian Bush. I currently burn tea tree, eucalyptus and acacia incense (from Addition Studio) that always fuels creativity for me.

Now, ‘touch’?

Crunchy eucalyptus leaves when walking, white beach sand, the smell of the forest after rain, a cool breeze on sun drenched skin, fresh linens on a washing line and early morning bird call.

What inspires you the most?

Nature. Always nature. It’s our greatest teacher.

What sense do you use the most in your life?

Sounds. I can easily experience sensory overload - so ensuring I have a nurturing soundscape around me is very important. The sea, birdsong, the sounds of rainforests - even white noise, help to facilitate my calm.

What about in your home?

Smell. I’ve always got a candle burning. I prefer scents based in nature.

What is one thing that is around you all the time; that inspires you, motivates you, makes you happy?

My family. My dad comes to mind the most (and my mum of course) but my father’s upbeat, gentle and fun nature makes me really cherish my family and how lucky I am to be so nourished and close to them all.

Which sense do you think sums up your individuality?

Sight. Without it, my work wouldn’t exist as it does.

And finally, any projects you’re working on that you want our readers to know about?

Watch this space!!
